What exactly is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a form of therapy that helps process distressing memories or traumatic experiences. During a session, you're asked to recall a specific event while being distracted with distractions like eye movements or sounds. This often quickly reduces the emotional charge of the memory. Many people notice a difference after just a few sessions.

At JongStressVRIJ, we regularly combine EMDR with techniques from the WEEBER® method, a method we developed in-house. This method focuses on insight, processing, and building resilience. In this way, we not only work on reducing symptoms but also on strengthening yourself.

Who is EMDR suitable for?

EMDR can provide a solution for various complaints. Consider: traumas, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, Grief after loss or bad childhood experiences, such as bullying or neglect. But also if you suffer from fear of failure, perfectionism or persistent tension, EMDR can provide a breakthrough. We offer this therapy for adults, adolescents, and children, with an approach tailored to each person's age and situation.

Common complaints for which EMDR is used include:

  • flashbacks or nightmares after a traumatic experience
  • fear of failure or being constantly 'on'
  • panic attacks or hyperventilation
  • persistent restlessness or sleep problems
  • sadness or guilt after loss or divorce
  • anger or outbursts of rage that you cannot properly place

What is the process like?

After you register, we'll contact you to discuss your needs. Based on this initial consultation, we'll schedule an intake. During this intake, we'll discuss your expectations and symptoms, and together we'll determine whether EMDR is a suitable treatment method for you. Does it feel right? Then we'll begin the process—usually consisting of several sessions that we build up gradually. Sometimes one or two sessions are sufficient. For more complex issues, we'll take more time, always in consultation with you.

Our EMDR therapy is goal-oriented, but unhurried. Between sessions, there's time for reflection, and we'll continually check in with you to see how you're doing. At the end of the process, we'll explore together how you can maintain the changes you've achieved—and whether anything else is needed to strengthen your progress.

On-site or online therapy

You can choose how you prefer to receive therapy. We offer EMDR at various locations, namely Zwaagdijk-Oost, Zwaagdijk-West, and Tuitjenhorn. Prefer not to travel? Then online therapy via a secure video connection is an excellent alternative. During an online session, you and your therapist can see each other and communicate personally, just like in a face-to-face appointment. This allows you flexibility while maintaining quality and personal attention.

We made this conscious choice because we want to work without diagnoses, standard protocols, or long waiting times. I'd like to share my experience with my husband and I about the relationship therapy I received from Joost and Priscilla. Relationship therapy sounds difficult to us, but we recommend it to everyone, even if your relationship is currently strong! We attended therapy with Joost and Priscilla. It was very helpful and comforting to talk together. Sometimes we felt overwhelmed. Joost and Priscilla are very knowledgeable and can summarize topics effectively. We were given assignments to do at home, which we still use in our daily lives. It all sounds so logical, but only when you face it head-on can you work on it. Thank you for your wonderful help!
