How to Deal with Your Need for Adventure and Thrills
Do you often find yourself drawn to excitement, adventure, and new experiences? Do you tend to take risks or get bored easily when life gets too quiet? If so, you're probably a HSS (Highly Sensitive Sensation Seeker).
This is a unique combination of high sensitivity (HSP) and the need for intense experiences. It may sound contradictory—being more sensitive to stimuli while simultaneously seeking out exciting situations—but it's perfectly normal for HSS individuals to combine these two traits. And it can be challenging to manage this dynamic, especially if you find yourself often overstimulated by your quest for adventure.
What is HSS?
HSS, or Highly Sensitive Sensation Seeker, is a term used to describe people who experience both a high level of sensitivity to external stimuli (such as sounds, emotions, or crowds) and a strong need for new, intense experiences. This can mean being drawn to adventure, danger, or adrenaline, even while simultaneously being more sensitive to the impressions these experiences bring. This can lead, for example, to a desire for travel, extreme sports, challenging careers, or intense social interactions.
The combination of these two characteristics means that HSS individuals often tend to seek excitement, but at the same time, they also quickly become overstimulated. This can lead to a vicious cycle where you exhaust yourself mentally or physically, even when you're looking for excitement or pleasure.
What Are the Characteristics of HSS?
HSSers may exhibit the following characteristics:
You have a strong need to try new things, whether it's travel, extreme sports, or simply seeking other forms of excitement.
When things are too calm or predictable, you often feel impatient or frustrated. You're always looking for new challenges and adventures.
Like an HSP, you react strongly to external stimuli. Sounds, lights, the emotions of others, and even crowds can overstimulate and tire you.
You adapt well to new situations, but this can also mean that you take the plunge more often than you perhaps should.
He experiences things intensely, both positive and negative. The feeling of joy and excitement can be just as intense as the feeling of fatigue or stress due to overstimulation.
How do you deal with your hSS?
Balancing your quest for adventure and excitement with your sensitivity to stimuli can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, there are ways to embrace these two sides of yourself and live in harmony.
Here are some tips to better manage your HSS:
The first thing you can do is understand what HSS means to you. How do you feel when you seek adventure? What energizes you, and what situations drain you? By being aware of these two aspects of yourself, you can learn when to dive into adventure and when to step back to avoid becoming overstimulated.
It's important to understand that your thrill-seeking can also be fulfilled in a healthy way. Instead of seeking risky or overstimulating activities that leave you exhausted, you can find ways to create healthy excitement and adventure while simultaneously respecting your need for rest and balance. For example, an exciting hike in nature, a challenging yoga practice, or new hobbies that push you out of your comfort zone without overexerting yourself.
People with HSS can often become overstimulated quickly when they try too many new things or are in a busy or intense environment. It's important to learn when to give yourself a break. It can be helpful to consciously give yourself time and space to recover from intense experiences. This doesn't mean you should suppress your adventurous spirit, but you'll learn when it's time to step away from the tension and unwind.
Plan your adventures, but also give yourself enough time to recharge and recover. This means you might need to schedule a quiet weekend every now and then, take a relaxing vacation, or take some time for yourself to calm your senses. This will ensure you maintain a balance between your need for excitement and your sensitivity to overstimulation.
As an HSS person, you may sometimes struggle to share your energy with others, especially if you're seeking adventure but are also sensitive to the emotions and energies of others. It's important to communicate openly about your needs. For example, if you want to get away for a weekend to experience new things, let your friends or family know that you might need a few days of rest afterward to recharge.
Self-care is absolutely essential for HSS individuals. Because you can be sensitive to both external stimuli and internal desires for adventure, it's important to schedule regular moments of recovery. Get enough sleep, exercise, and eat a healthy diet. This will ensure you have the energy to fully embrace your quest for new experiences without exhausting yourself.
HSS individuals often have a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, enabling them to embrace challenges and think outside the box. You can use this trait to create new opportunities for yourself and others, while simultaneously maintaining a healthy balance between excitement and relaxation.
It can be frustrating to feel like you're always seeking new experiences, yet simultaneously sensitive to stimuli. Be patient with yourself and give yourself the space to learn how to find balance. Sometimes it will be necessary to try new things to discover what truly suits you—and that's okay!
When can you seek help?
If you find your quest for adventure and excitement constantly draining you, or if you struggle to balance your emotions and stimuli, seeking help can be helpful. A coach or therapist can help you gain insight into your HSS traits and develop strategies to understand and manage both your need for sensation and your sensitivity.
The Power of HSS: Adventure in Balance
As an HSS person, you seek adventure, but you also have a deep sensitivity to the world around you. It's a unique combination that, when properly understood and managed, allows you to live a rich and fulfilling life. By taking good care of yourself, learning your limits, and healthily enjoying the thrills you seek, you can embrace and balance both your need for adventure and your sensitivity.
