Identity and Self-Concept

Who Are You Really?

Have you ever felt like you don't quite know who you are? Or perhaps you've come to know yourself differently over time, but now you're confused about who you really are? It's perfectly normal to sometimes wonder: “Who am I anyway?” or “What do I really want?”.

Identity and self-concept are often not fixed, but change and evolve as we grow, gain new experiences, and learn more about ourselves.

It's not always easy to understand who you are and what you truly want, especially when you're dealing with external pressure or expectations from others. Yet, it's important to know that it's perfectly okay to stumble in your search for yourself, to question whether your choices are truly right for you, or to simply not know exactly where you fit in the world. Identity isn't a static thing—it's a journey, a process of discovery that you can shape as you see fit.

What is Identity and Self-Concept?

Identity is everything you are: it's the sum total of your values, beliefs, experiences, interests, and how you see yourself in the world. It's how you define yourself: who you are, what you value, and what you believe. This can apply to all sorts of aspects of your life, such as your gender, cultural background, hobbies, social circle, and career.

Self-concept Self-esteem is how you see and evaluate yourself. It involves how you describe yourself in terms of qualities, talents, and beliefs about your own worth. Your self-concept is often influenced by how others see you, but also by your own thoughts and feelings about yourself. This can change depending on your environment, your life experiences, and your personal growth.

So identity and self-concept are closely linked, but they're not fixed terms. What you think of yourself now may be different in a few months or years—and that's perfectly okay. In fact, it's something to embrace!

What do you notice about Identity and Self-Concept?

Perhaps you recognize some of these feelings:

  • You sometimes feel insecure about who you are, especially in social situations.
  • You feel that you cannot always be yourself, for example because you adapt to the expectations of others.
  • You don't always know what you want in life, or what you really find important.
  • You may feel “lost” in some situations or doubt your choices.
  • You often compare yourself to others and may therefore feel less valuable.

These kinds of thoughts and feelings are completely normal. We all pause at times to reflect on our identity and self-concept, especially during times of change or new life steps. You're not alone in experiencing this!

Why Identity and Self-Concept Are Important

Why should you even care about your identity and self-concept? Because they form the foundation of everything you do. How you see yourself determines how you make choices, how you interact with others, and how you find your place in the world. When you have a strong and positive self-concept, you feel more confident, are better able to overcome setbacks, and make choices that better reflect who you truly are.

How you see yourself influences your relationships and your life choices. If you value yourself, you're more likely to attract the right people and build healthier relationships. It also makes it easier to make choices that truly bring you happiness, instead of losing yourself in what others expect of you.

A healthy self-concept fosters self-confidence. It helps you love yourself, regardless of what's happening around you. When you accept who you are, you're less sensitive to the opinions of others and can stand firmer in your own life.

Developing your identity is a key part of personal growth. As you get to know yourself better and clarify your values and goals, you can approach life with greater purpose and confidence. Self-knowledge empowers you to improve yourself and shape your life.

How Do You Discover Your True Self?

Discovering your identity and improving your self-concept is a journey. It's something you continue to develop throughout your life, and that's precisely the beauty of it. However, there are a few steps you can take to gain greater insight into who you are and what you value:

What's important to you? What do you want to achieve in life? What do you find worthwhile? By reflecting on your values, you can get a better sense of who you are and where you want to go. Write them down, make a list, and see what they mean to you.

How did you become who you are today? What experiences have shaped you? Recognizing key moments in your life—both positive and negative—can help you better understand why you think and act the way you do.

Your identity isn't fixed, and it doesn't have to be. It's important to be open to change. Try new things, meet different people, and be open to different perspectives. You'll find that this will lead you to discover new sides of yourself.

Sometimes we want to paint a picture of who we'd like to be, instead of who we actually are. Try to look at yourself honestly, without judgment. What are your strengths? What are you proud of? What might you want to do differently? Self-acceptance starts with being honest about who you are.

It's easy to compare yourself to others, especially on social media. But everyone is unique, and you don't have to walk in someone else's shoes to be successful or happy. Focus on your own path and grow at your own pace.

Sometimes it helps to share your thoughts and feelings with someone you trust. Talk to friends, family, or a coach about who you are and what matters to you. Others can sometimes help you see things from a different perspective.

You Are Who You Are – And That's Enough

Your identity is something that evolves, that can grow and change as you do. It's normal to feel lost sometimes or not know exactly who you are. The most important thing is that you give yourself the space to discover and grow. You are already good enough, just the way you are, but there's always room to learn more and evolve.

Remember, you never have to be stuck in a certain image of yourself. Who you are today doesn't have to determine who you'll be tomorrow. You have the power to choose your own path and shape your life in a way that truly suits you.

Because I was going through a difficult time, my employer recommended a program at "Jong Stress Vrij" (Young Stress Free). I'd never received this kind of help before and didn't know beforehand whether it would help me. Despite my period of negativity, this program definitely helped me, from EMDR treatments to a normal and trusting hour of conversation. I'm also very grateful for their help, advice, and support. I now cope with negative situations more easily and can also let things go more quickly thanks to the program. I therefore recommend it to anyone who's feeling down! Once again, I'm very grateful to "Jong Stress Vrij" and my employer for this kind of support. Kind regards, Max
