Obsessive thoughts or suicidal thoughts?
Personally, I (Priscilla) have struggled with obsessive thoughts. They're very similar to suicidal thoughts, but they're more distant, even if they don't feel that way.
You'd never commit suicide, but those thoughts are there, and they make you very sad and depressed. And you don't understand. How did this happen, and why do I have this?
There's also often shame surrounding this topic, and it's not something you discuss very readily with others. Eventually, the thoughts can take over so much that you start to believe them, with all the consequences that entails.
Suicidal thoughts and obsessive thoughts are essentially the brain's escape. They indicate that you don't want the feeling you're experiencing right now, and that's why you "escape" into these thoughts.
Perhaps you recognize this: 'If I hit a tree now, I don't have to do anything for a moment' or 'If I throw myself down the stairs, then everything stops for a moment'
Usually, you're exhausted and desperately need a break. These are also obsessive thoughts. They can come in all sorts of forms. And you know what? Everyone has them!
Please don't keep it to yourself, no matter how big your problems seem. Talk about it, and you'll see you're not alone!
HSP trait
HSP stands for Highly Sensitive Person. If you're highly sensitive, your nervous system is more sensitive to stimuli. This means you perceive danger more quickly. This makes you think much more carefully.
You may also frequently search for solutions to problems. Furthermore, chances are high that your senses (one or perhaps all of them) are very well developed. These senses include hearing, sight, touch, smell, taste, and intuition.
High sensitivity is hereditary. So, chances are very high that there are other people in your family who are highly sensitive, just like you!
Different types of sensitivity
Sensitivity varies from person to person. Different types of sensitivity include:
- Physical (For example, being able to hear sounds very well, feeling labels on your skin or the tickle of a woolen sweater or being able to taste different flavors very well.)
- Emotional (This includes not being able to cope with crowds, feeling the emotions of others and thinking about things that are unfair.)
- Intuitive (Think of sensing when people have had a fight, sensing when someone is upset, and knowing in advance what's going to happen without having an explanation.)
- Being sensitive to something new (For example, finding it difficult when someone is watching you or testing you, finding new situations very exciting or feeling overwhelmed by all the new things.)
You don't necessarily have to have all of these characteristics. You can also be highly sensitive if, for example, you have a very sensitive body.
Because your nervous system is more sensitive than that of 80 percent of the population, you'll react differently to stimuli. For example, you might be completely exhausted after a day at school and need to recover. Meeting up with friends at that moment is definitely not fun! You might also dislike loud music and therefore prefer not to go to a party. Because you're more sensitive than most people, you become overstimulated more easily. So, you need to take care of yourself differently.
In many schools, work is increasingly being done through projects. This requires a lot of consultation and collaboration. As a result, the classroom is rarely quiet anymore. Everyone chats. As a result, you can be very bothered by all the stimuli (the voices of all the children, emotions, the atmosphere, etc.). Because you have to process so much stimulation, it can lead to overload. This can lead to a cluttered mind, physical complaints, or a bad mood.
Because you have a greater sense of empathy (you can empathize with others), you're more sensitive to the atmosphere. This means that if you have a pleasant classroom, you feel safe. However, when bullying occurs, you're more likely to feel unsafe. This can mean you're less able to function. Because you don't feel safe, you might withdraw. This can lead people to consider you shy, introverted, and sometimes even autistic. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Some young people can actually become very hyperactive from overstimulation. This is because they're constantly adjusting to the stimuli around them. Finding the peace and quiet to concentrate is then very difficult! For example, if your classroom is very busy, this can lead to you being constantly preoccupied and never getting around to completing your assignments.
Finally, it's important to learn how to filter stimuli to protect yourself. Your sensitivity makes you unique. This means you can also use it instead of suppressing it. Want to know how best to do this? Then schedule an intake interview.
